Stretch Film vs Pallet Wrap: Complete Guide for Warehouse and Logistics Managers

Stretch film and pallet wrap are terms used interchangeably in most warehouses and logistics operations. They refer to the same product: a highly stretchable plastic film wrapped around pallets, bundles or irregularly shaped loads to stabilise them for storage or transit.

What matters more than the terminology is understanding the product specifications, the different types available and how to choose the right one for your specific operation. Getting this wrong means either overspending on film that is more than your application requires, or undershooting and dealing with loads that shift, topple or arrive damaged.

What Stretch Film Actually Is

Stretch film is made from LLDPE, linear low-density polyethylene. Unlike LDPE which is used for garbage bags and general packaging film, LLDPE has a linear molecular structure that gives it exceptional elasticity. It can be stretched significantly beyond its original length and then contracts, applying holding force to whatever it is wrapped around.

Hand Stretch Film vs Machine Stretch Film

Hand stretch film is applied manually. An operator walks around the pallet unwinding the roll by hand, applying tension as they go. It is designed to stretch at relatively low force levels and is used in operations where pallet volumes are low to medium.

Machine stretch film is applied by a pallet wrapping machine at controlled tension, consistent overlap and consistent wrap patterns automatically. Machine film is designed for higher pre-stretch ratios and typically delivers better film yield per pallet.

For operations wrapping more than 15 to 20 pallets per day, a wrapping machine and machine film is worth evaluating. The operating cost difference at volume is significant.

Common Applications in Indian Warehouses

FMCG distribution wraps pallets for transit between distribution centres and retail outlets. Cold chain logistics uses stretch film at low temperatures. Manufacturing and export uses film that stabilises loads through international transit. E-commerce fulfillment needs reliable film supply for high throughput. Construction materials need higher gauge film for heavy and irregular pallets.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate how much stretch film I need per pallet?

The amount of film per pallet depends on pallet dimensions, number of wraps applied, overlap percentage and pre-stretch ratio. Your film supplier can help you calculate consumption per pallet based on your specific wrap pattern and pallet dimensions.

Can stretch film be recycled?

Yes. LLDPE stretch film is recyclable through plastic film recycling streams. Used stretch film should be collected separately from other waste and sent to a film recycler. Clean, uncontaminated film has recycling value.

What is the difference between stretch film and shrink film?

Stretch film is applied by stretching and wrapping at tension. It does not require heat. Shrink film is applied loosely and then heat is applied to shrink it tightly around the product. They are different products for different applications.
