Biohazard Bags Under BMWM 2016: What the Specification Requires
The Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules 2016 define the requirements for bags used to collect regulated biomedical waste. Biohazard bags must be manufactured from non-chlorinated LDPE. Chlorinated plastics release dioxins when incinerated, which is why BMWM 2016 specifically excludes them. Bags must carry the biohazard symbol in the appropriate colour for the waste category. Yellow bags are for human anatomical waste, animal anatomical waste, solid waste including contaminated dressings and syringes post-discard, and cytotoxic chemical waste. Red bags are for contaminated recyclable waste going for autoclaving or microwaving. Blue or white bags are for glass and metallic sharps. Black bags are for solid general waste from healthcare facilities including soiled earthen cups and discarded medicines. The manufacturer must hold PCB approval for biomedical bag production, and the generating facility name and address must appear on each bag.
